Former India cricketer and chief selector has backed struggling senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to score heavily in the upcoming five-match Test series vs Australia. Notably, both Rohit and Kohli have been going through poor form in the longest format which has even raised questions on their place in the Indian Test team.

The star duo failed to cross the 100-run mark in the last series against New Zealand with Kohli scoring just 93 and Rohit scoring 91 runs respectively. Despite their recent struggles, Chetan Sharma feels there isn’t much to worry about the two batting stalwarts and they will dazzle with their bats in Australia.

“Let’s honour and respect what Rohit and Virat have done for the country. Players like Rohit and Virat are never out of form. They are never in a lean or bad patch. These words shouldn’t be used for them. We are thankful to them. They are still doing it. We always talk about them and focus on them and want them to shine every time because they are superstars. Just wait and watch what Rohit and Virat do in Australia. They will dazzle with their bats,” Sharma told Times of India.

Virat and Rohit’s poor form in 2024

In the ongoing year, Kohli has scored 250 runs from six Tests at an average of 22.72 with just one half-century to his name. On the other hand, Rohit has scored 588 runs from 11 Tests (21 innings) at an average of 29.40 with two hundreds and as many fifties. Rohit had a miserable recent home season as the India skipper scored just 133 runs from five matches at an average of 13.30 with one fifty.

The duo will be desperate to bounce back in Australia as India fight hard to keep their World Test Championship (WTC) hopes alive. Kohli in particular loves batting in Australia averaging a staggering 54.08 having scored 1352 runs from 13 matches. The former India captain will be eager to find his mojo back in his favourite conditions and help his team complete a hat-trick of series wins in Australia.
