The Orlando Magic defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 118-106 in a thrilling NBA regular game on Monday, March 24, at the Kia Center. Luka Doncic spoke with Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley, who had been his mentor when they were teammates with the Dallas Mavericks, after the game.

Covering their mouths to keep the conversation private, Doncic and Mosley hugged and spoke to each other. The moment was captured on video and quickly made waves on social media, with Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel among those sharing it on X.

Mosley worked as an assistant coach for the Mavericks from 2014 to 2021 and played the main role in Doncic’s development during his first three seasons in the NBA. Luka was a vocal supporter of Mosley’s coaching ability, publicly endorsing him as a head coach candidate back in June 2021 before Mosley ultimately took the position in Orlando.

Even after Doncic’s trade from the Mavericks to the Lakers on February 2, their relationship has remained good. After the trade, Mosley defended Doncic against criticism about his work ethic and conditioning, which had originated within the Mavericks organization.

Mosley reflects on Doncic’s work ethic

During Monday’s pregame press conference, Mosley was asked about Doncic’s commitment to improving his game during their time together in Dallas.

“All I can remember when he first came into the league was a lot of nights spent in the gym, playing one-on-one with Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Smith Jr., just playing basketball, getting after it, and working on his shot,” Mosley said.

While some in Dallas have questioned Doncic’s focus, Mosley pushed back on those narratives. “My recollection of being with him is that he was constantly working. He loves the game of basketball, and when you love the game, you put in the work.”

The timing of Doncic and Mosley’s reunion is intriguing because the Lakers will meet the Mavericks at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday.
