Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aviero, went on a heartfelt rant on social media, coming to the aid of her brother, who faced massive criticism for not appearing for the funeral of his Portuguese teammate, Diogo Jota, that took place on Saturday, July 5.

His absence sparked massive criticism on the footballing icon, considering that other players made their way to Jota’s home town despite playing matches earlier across the globe.

Responding to the criticism, Aveiro shared a series of Instagram stories, reflecting on her family’s own experience with loss when their father passed away in 2005. She recalled how the media invaded their privacy at the time, creating chaos at the cemetery and showing little regard for the family’s grief.

“When my father died, in addition to the pain of loss, we had to deal with a flood of cameras and curious people at the cemetery. And everywhere we went. And the attention was not what it is today,” she wrote. “They destroyed tombs, climbed wherever they could. It was total destruction in a cemetery, never seen before. No respect whatsoever. And it wasn’t to pay homage.”

She went on to criticise the media and the public, suggesting they don’t understand the emotional toll such scrutiny brings. “About pain, family and real support – you trash journalism and curious people – you will never know what it means until you go through it,” she added.

She also slammed those who targeted Ronaldo, despite his public condolence message.. “Criticism for nothing. I repeat, nothing. A sick society. We all have families,” she said.

“It is absurdly shameful to see TV channels and social networks emphasising an absence, rather than respectfully honouring a grieving family devastated by the loss of two brothers. It’s regrettable. Human evil is also a war, and every day we have to fight against it,” she added.

Aveiro’s response highlighted the emotional weight behind Ronaldo’s silence, urging empathy over judgement.
