WPL 2025: Sutherland, Lanning star as Delhi Capitals beat UP Warriorz in thriller-OxBig News Network

Delhi Capitals defeated UP Warriorz by seven wickets in a thriller on Wednesday, February 19 in the WPL 2025 match at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. With the win, DC moved to second in the table with four points and a net run rate of -0.544. The Warriorz, on the other hand, slipped to the bottom of the table after back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Gujarat Giants and the Capitals.

The Warriorz got off to a splendid start as they scored 66 runs in the powerplay courtesy of Kiran Navgire’s power-hitting. Navgire scored a fifty off 24 balls, smashing six fours and three sixes in her 51-run knock. Her opening partner Dinesh Vrinda got off to a start, making 16 off 15, while skipper Deepti Sharma and Tahlia McGrath failed to go into double digits.

Shweta Sehrawat steadied the ship with a 37-run knock before Marizanne Kapp dismissed her. But it was Chinelle Henry’s cameo that helped the Warriorz post a competitive score of 166 for seven. Henry, who came in a replacement for Alyssa Healy, made 33 off 15 balls.

Annabel Sutherland was the star for the Capitals after she got the wickets of Navgire and Vrinda to finish with figures of 4-0-26-2. Kapp, Jess Jonassen and Minnu Mani got one scalp apiece.

Lanning, Sutherland, Kapp take DC home

In the run-chase, Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning laid the platform with a 65-run partnership off 6.5 overs. Shafali made a comeback from his golden duck against RCB to score 26 off 16 balls. Lanning also returned to form with a gutsy half-century. Lanning went on to score 69 off 49 with 12 fours.

Jemimah Rodrigues got out for a duck, but Lanning and Sutherland stitched together a vital 49-run stand. After impressing with the ball, the 23-year-old Sutherland stepped up with the ball as well, scoring an unbeaten 41 off 35, decorated with four fours.

Kapp lent Sutherland support with a quick-fire 29 off 17. With 11 runs needed off the last over, Sutherland hit McGrath for two fours in a row to take DC past the finish line.
