The Supreme Court has refused to return YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s passport. He is being investigated for his controversial remarks on the stand-up comedy show India’s Got Latent.
Request for Passport Rejected
Ranveer Allahbadia, who faced criticism for his comments on ‘s*x and parents,’ requested his passport back, but the court denied it. The matter will be reviewed only after the investigation is complete. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that the probe would be finished in two weeks.
Interim Protection Extended
Although the court denied the return of his passport, it extended the interim protection from arrest granted to Ranveer Allahbadia in connection with police cases filed against him in Mumbai, Guwahati, and Jaipur.
The interim protection was granted last month after Ranveer Allahbadia was instructed to submit his passport, which had stopped him from traveling abroad for professional commitments like international shows.
Supreme Court Criticizes Allahbadia’s Behavior
The Supreme Court expressed disapproval of Ranveer Allahbadia’s behavior, criticizing his actions sharply. Referring to his controversial remarks on India’s Got Latent, the court stated, “There is something dirty in his mind that is spread by this programme.”
Allahbadia’s Assurance to Maintain Decency
In response, Ranveer Allahbadia assured the court through an undertaking that he would maintain “decency” in his future shows. He argued that not having his passport was impacting his ability to earn and work internationally. Solicitor General Mehta acknowledged Allahbadia’s cooperation with the investigation, noting his appearance before authorities in Guwahati and the National Commission for Women. He also recognized Allahbadia’s commitment to ensuring his future shows remain respectful.
