New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Telecom regulator TRAI on Wednesday floated a session paper on project of the microwave spectrum in decrease 6 GHz, 7 GHz, 13 GHz, 15 GHz, 18 GHz, 21 GHz bands, in addition to E and V bands.

TRAI has mounted June 25, 2025 as deadline for feedback and July 9 for counter feedback.

“…a session paper on project of the microwave spectrum in 6 GHz (decrease), 7 GHz, 13 GHz, 15 GHz, 18 GHz, 21 GHz Bands, E-Band, and V-Band has been positioned on the TRAI’s web site for looking for feedback and counter-comments from stakeholders,” the regulator stated.

In 2022, Department of Telecom (DoT) had approached TRAI to supply suggestions for project of spectrum in E&V bands and Microwave Access (MWA) in addition to Microwave Backbone (MWB) spectrum within the stated frequency bands.

Post that, TRAI had launched a session paper on project of spectrum in E&V bands, and Microwave Access (MWA) & Microwave Backbone (MWB) for soliciting feedback of stakeholders on the topic.

Meanwhile, the Telecommunication Act, 2023 was enacted in December 2023.

In gentle of the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 in respect of radio backhaul for telecommunication providers, TRAI, through a letter in February 2024, conveyed that the telecom division might need to assessment its 2022 reference.

“In response, DoT, by means of a recent reference letter dated 13.09.2024, whereas agreeing to the TRAI’s remark that backhaul spectrum is part of the First Schedule of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 for which the project methodology can be administrative, requested TRAI to supply suggestions below Section 11(1)(a) of the TRAI Act, 1997,” TRAI stated.

The points included demand evaluation and scope of service/ utilization for 57-64/ 66 GHz (V-band) and 71-76 GHz/ 81-86 GHz (E-band) and accordingly methodology of project of spectrum and related phrases and situations.

Other sides included spectrum prices and associated phrases and situations corresponding to spectrum cap, service aggregation for project of spectrum within the six bands for backhaul functions of business telecom providers.

A typical public telecommunication community consists of the entry community; core community; and backhaul hyperlinks.

The entry community is the final mile connectivity to shopper gadgets, whereas core community connects the entry community to international public networks. The backhaul hyperlinks are used to attach the entry community with the core community.

These embrace degree of demand of the spectrum in these conventional backhaul bands; the business providers for which these bands needs to be assigned; and the strategy for such project. Other queries raised embrace the related phrases and situations, validity interval of project, and rollout obligations.

“As the 7125-8400 MHz vary within the 7 GHz band and the 14.8-15.35 GHz vary within the 15 GHz band are being thought-about for IMT in WRC27, whether or not there’s a must assessment the utilization of seven GHz and 15 GHz microwave backhaul bands at this stage itself, or ought to the assessment be undertaken after contemplating the result of WRC-27,” TRAI requested.
