Frito-Lay issued a voluntary recall of a limited number of Tostitos tortilla chip bags sold across 13 US states, warning that the snack may contain an undeclared milk allergen.
The recall applies specifically to 13-ounce bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips, which may have been accidentally filled with nacho cheese tortilla chips. As a result, the product could contain milk, a potential risk for those with dairy allergies or sensitivities.
According to the company, less than 1,300 bags are affected. The impacted products have a UPC of 28400 52848 and a “guaranteed fresh” date of 20 May 2025, The Independent reported.
The chips were distributed to stores and online retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. They were available for purchase starting 7 March.
In a statement, Frito-Lay clarified that the product is safe to consume for individuals without a milk allergy. No allergic reactions have been reported to date, CBS news reported.
The recall does not affect any other Tostitos products, flavours, bag sizes or variety packs.
This marks the second allergen-related recall by Frito-Lay in recent months. Back in November, the company recalled a small batch of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips after discovering the presence of undeclared milk, identified through a customer report. That incident was later classified by the FDA as a Class I recall, indicating a risk of serious health consequences.
Frito-Lay’s announcement follows a string of recent food recalls across the US In the last few weeks alone, Coca-Cola pulled over 10,000 cans after plastic contamination was found, Aldi recalled Happy Farm’s Colby Jack Deli Sliced Cheese due to possible stainless steel fragments, and Target’s Favorite Day New York Style Cheesecake was withdrawn from shelves after undeclared pecans were discovered in mislabelled packaging.
