The Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) on Saturday suspended two engineers and imposed a fine on the contractor after a quality inspection revealed substandard construction of the newly-opened Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Setu, the longest elevated flyover in Bhopal.
Inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on January 23, the 2.53 km flyover was built at a cost of Rs 153 crore. Following an inspection on Saturday by Additional Chief Secretary (PWD) Neeraj Mandloi and senior officials, the team found the flyover’s riding surface quality and finishing unsatisfactory, with excessive corrosion noted at two expansion joint locations.
Assistant Engineer Ravi Shukla, the project in-charge, and Sub-Engineer Umakant Mishra were immediately suspended. Show-cause notices were issued to Executive Engineer Javed Shakeel for alleged negligence in monitoring and to Chief Engineer (Bridges) G.P. Verma for clarification.
