A 40-year-old man died at Attavara village in Hassan taluk on Thursday after he lost money to betting on cricket.
The police identified the deceased as Swaroop. He was found suffocating at his house around 3 p.m. on Thursday. His brother, Sathish, took him to the hospital, and the doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The family members found a chit in his pocket, in which he mentioned that he had been cheated by three people who forced him to invest money in cricket betting. Besides, he had borrowed money from a private finance firm, and the representatives of the firm repeatedly called him to repay. Swaroop was unmarried. Dudda Police have registered a case based on the complaint filed by Sathish.
In another case, Vanitha, 39, ended her life by suicide, unable to bear the burden of a loan, in Hassan town.
According to the police, she had borrowed a loan of ₹2 lakh from three persons in Holenarsipur. She had been paying interest on the amount every week. However, for the last four months, she had not been able to clear the interest. Those who gave her money constantly harassed her and forced her to clear the amount.
She attempted to end her life during her visit to Hassan on March 18. She was taken to a hospital in Hassan, where she died on March 27. Based on her mother Shanthamma’s complaint, Hassan Town Police have registered a case.
