With most retail traders functioning out of makeshift stalls at the parking lots, unhygienic conditions continue to prevail at the Kasivilangi fish market in Tiruchi.
Fish and plastic waste strewn all around greet the customers. A solar-energy panel atop the terrace lies neglected.
Vacant stalls have become a haven for anti-social elements, who throw glass bottles and trash in the toilets near the stalls. The unclean surroundings put off the customers who come to the fish market.
Putrid water flowing from refrigerated trucks transporting the fish leaks in the marketplace and has no place to flow out. The water stagnates in the area and causes a stench, and the problem has worsened due to the recent rains in the city.
Plan to clean up
“Reorganising the market by moving the stalls indoors would greatly improve the shopping experience and expanding the stalls would help reduce congestion. Additionally, better waste disposal methods are needed to eliminate the unpleasant odour,” said V. Suresh, a customer.
“There are plans to reallot the stalls of retail vendors. This will clear the place for parking vehicles. Steps are being taken to clean the marketplace,” said K. Chennu Krishnan, Assistant Commissioner of Zone 5 of Tiruchi Corporation.
