US President Donald Trump has stirred global outrage with a bold new move that could shake up the international film industry. On Monday, Trump announced a sweeping 100 per cent tariff on all foreign-made movies, claiming that America’s film sector is “dying a very fast death”.
Trump’s new policy didn’t sit well with Indian filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri. He wasted no time in calling out the decision on X (formerly Twitter), warning that it could spell doom for Indian cinema.
Agnihotri hits back: Disastrous move
He posted, “ALERT: Trump’s 100% Movie Tariff Threatens Indian Cinema: Trump’s 100% tariff on movies is a disastrous move. If this absurdity prevails, India’s struggling film industry will collapse entirely, with no one to save it.”
He also criticised the Indian film community for being too caught up in glamour and fame, saying, “Indian film leaders must wake up, unite, and fight this threat instead of chasing paparazzi and self-glorification.”
Trump took to his social media platform
“Industry in America is dying a very fast death. Other countries are offering all sorts of movie incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood and many other areas within the USA are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other nations and, therefore, a national security threat.”
He added, “It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorising the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100 per cent tariff on any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands. We want movies made in America again.”
Reportedly, during a White House briefing on Sunday, Trump blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom for Hollywood’s decline in recent years. He accused other nations of “stealing” America’s films and filmmaking talent, further asserting that this was contributing to the downfall of the US movie industry.
