Watch: Dewald Brevis DRS drama costs CSK in IPL thriller vs RCB-OxBig News Network

Chennai Super Kings batter Dewald Brevis found himself at the centre of a major DRS controversy during their IPL 2025 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. In a thriller that swung until the final ball, a missed review opportunity involving the young South African proved to be a turning point-one that ultimately tilted the result in RCB’s favour.

Brevis walked in to bat in the 17th over of CSK’s chase, moments after the dismissal of Ayush Mhatre, who had anchored the innings with a sublime 94. Facing Lungi Ngidi, Brevis was struck on the pads first ball and given out LBW. The umpire raised his finger immediately, followed by a direct hit at the non-striker’s end as both batters continued running.

Amid the confusion, Brevis approached Ravindra Jadeja to discuss a review. Crucially, the DRS timer was not displayed on the screen-leaving Brevis unaware of how little time he had. By the time he signaled for the review, the umpire informed him that the 15-second window had expired. Jadeja was visibly frustrated and exchanged words with the officials, but the decision stood. Brevis, dismissed for a golden duck, had no choice but to walk back without the chance to overturn the call.

Replays moments later confirmed CSK’s worst fears: the ball was clearly missing the stumps. Had the review been taken on time, Brevis would have survived, and the chase could have continued with renewed momentum.

The original LBW decision also came under scrutiny, with many questioning whether the on-field call should have been given out at all. Despite the setback, CSK kept fighting, with Jadeja leading the charge with a valiant unbeaten 77. However, even with Mhatre’s brilliance earlier in the innings, the Super Kings fell just short, ending at 211/7.

Yash Dayal was tasked with defending 15 runs in the final over and made a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Dhoni, leaving CSK needing 13 runs off the last three balls. Despite the pressure, the situation became even more tense when only four runs were required off the final ball. However, Dayal’s full-length delivery allowed Shivam Dube to manage just a single, sealing a narrow victory for RCB.
