A dramatic mid-air security alert unfolded on Sunday when an American Airlines flight from New York to Delhi was intercepted by Italian fighter jets following a bomb threat. A video circulating on social media captured the tense moment as Eurofighter Typhoons of the Italian Air Force escorted the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.
American Airlines Flight AA292, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, was en route to Indira Gandhi International Airport when authorities received the threat, prompting its diversion to Rome. The aircraft, which had taken off from John F Kennedy International Airport, was met by the fighter jets as it entered Italian airspace.
The plane landed safely at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, where passengers and crew disembarked. The security concern was later deemed “non-credible”, according to American Airlines, and the flight was scheduled to continue to Delhi the following day.
