Why is Walmart facing a nationwide boycott in US? Check items and services targeted

A week-long boycott of Walmart in the United States, organized by the People’s Union USA, began on April 7. This boycott is the latest in a series of economic blackouts targeting major corporations that have rolled back their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.

The group, which was founded in February, has previously initiated similar movements against companies such as Target, Nestl, McDonald’s, and Amazon for similar reasons.

Reason Behind The Boycott

The primary reason behind the current boycott is Walmart’s decision to eliminate its DEI initiatives, a move that has drawn the ire of the People’s Union USA.

The group believes that corporate greed and political corruption are undermining the nation’s progress. They argue that consumers, regardless of their political affiliations, can agree on the need to challenge these corporate decisions that harm social progress.

After President Trump resumed office in January, one of his administration’s first actions was to dismantle federal DEI initiatives. In the wake of this, several major private companies, including Meta, Walmart, Amazon, and Lowe’s, followed suit by quietly scaling back or even eliminating their DEI programs. These corporate decisions sparked widespread outrage from advocacy groups.

Boycott Scope: What’s Included?

The People’s Union USA has outlined the specific areas of Walmart that will be targeted during the boycott. Consumers are urged to refrain from spending money at any Walmart location or using its online services, including its mobile apps and affiliate platforms. Key areas affected by the boycott include:

Walmart Retail Outlets: This includes all Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets across the country.

Online Services: Consumers are asked to avoid Walmart+ membership, Walmart.com, Walmart Marketplace, and the Walmart Grocery App.

Financial Services: This includes services such as bill payment, money transfers, Walmart MoneyCard, and in-store check cashing.

Health Services: Walmart Health Centers, Vision Centers, and Pharmacy services are also included in the boycott’s scope.
