Florida State University (FSU) issued an emergency alert on Thursday afternoon after an active shooter was reported near the Student Union on its Tallahassee campus. University authorities and police responded swiftly to the incident, urging all students, staff, and faculty to shelter in place.
“Police are on scene or on the way. Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures,” read the university’s initial alert.
Multiple alerts followed, reinforcing the shelter-in-place directive and advising the campus community to remain indoors and vigilant. “This is an emergency message for Florida State University Tallahassee Campus. Continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union. Stay alert for more information,” said a subsequent update.
FSU further instructed individuals in need of immediate emergency assistance to contact 911 or the Florida State University Police Department (FSUPD) at 850-644-1234.
As a precautionary measure, all classes and university events scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled. Authorities also advised anyone not already on the main campus to avoid the area.
