Focus on animal well-being, not just treatment: Agri university VC – The Tribune

The oath-taking ceremony for the 34th batch of veterinary science graduates was held at Dr GC Negi Veterinary and Animal Science College, part of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University. The event marked the successful completion of the BVSc & AH degree programme by 57 new veterinarians, including 30 girls and 27 boys.

Chief guest Vice-Chancellor Prof Naveen Kumar emphasised the importance of animal well-being over mere treatment. He urged the graduates to approach their profession with care and compassion, reminding them that animals cannot voice their needs. He also encouraged them to embrace entrepreneurship, leveraging the rapid advancements in the animal husbandry sector.

Prof Kumar highlighted the growing demand for animal protein and the employment opportunities in related industries. “For livestock keepers, animals are not just ATMs but also fixed deposits in times of need,” he remarked, encouraging the new veterinarians to consider starting enterprises with the help of easily accessible capital.

Congratulating the graduates, Prof Kumar stressed the need to understand traditional knowledge and systems while serving livestock farmers and society with dedication. He distributed Internship Completion Certificates and unveiled new books and manuals during the ceremony.

Dr Ravindra Kumar, Dean of the college, shared the institution’s milestones since its establishment in 1986, noting that 1,090 graduates have passed out to date. He also administered the professional oath to the graduates and highlighted the role of animal disease testing laboratories and livestock farms in the college’s achievements.

The event saw the presence of parents, statutory officers, scientists, and faculty members. Student Welfare Officer Dr Ashok Kumar Panda delivered the vote of thanks.
