How a Japanese artist turns leaves into pieces of art, spreads ADHD awareness

A Japanese artist, known as Lito, has gained global admiration for his intricate art crafted on fallen leaves. His work features designs like a frog under a taro-leaf umbrella, animals in playful parades, and Ukiyo-e-style depictions of Mount Fuji and waves. Using delicate carving techniques, Lito transforms ordinary leaves into extraordinary pieces of art, giving them a second life.

Lito began this unique craft in 2020 and regularly shares his creations on social media, captivating fans worldwide. The art has not only brought joy to others but also provided him with solace and purpose, helping him navigate the challenges of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Preferring to work at night, Lito selects leaves treated with a chemical to prevent wrinkles and sketches his designs with a pen. With a cutting knife, he meticulously carves intricate patterns, spending up to eight hours on complex pieces. His portfolio includes works like “Scrolls of Frolicking Animals,” “Leaf Aquarium,” and “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji,” often featuring animals and his personal artistic touches.

At 38, Lito reflects on his journey, describing how he always exhibited intense focus and patience but struggled to conform in school and work environments. After being diagnosed with ADHD at 30, he re-evaluated his approach to life, deciding to embrace his unique traits rather than suppress them.

Discovering leaf-cutting in 2020 felt like a natural fit, allowing him to channel his concentration into something creative. His art has gained widespread recognition on social media, and he has published books and held regular solo exhibitions across Japan.

“If my work brings happiness to others, that’s all the motivation I need to keep creating,” Lito shares, expressing his dedication to expanding his craft and connecting with people through his art.
