Indian scholar Ranjani Srinivasan, a Columbia student, who fled to Canada to escape arrest by the feds said she still hopes she would get back to the PhD course as it is almost at the fag end and if now Columbia does not take her back, the last five years of her life would mean nothing, a complete waste, she told in an interview with CNN.
Ranjani hit the headlines soon after another Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest — as Department of Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem posted a video of Srinivasan leaving the country. Noem claimed Srinivasan self-deported herself using the CBP Home app, which Srinivasan dismissed and said she did not use that app as that was not her phone. She said she just booked a flight to Canada and left the country — though till date she is clueless why ICE agents came looking for her.
“It is a privilege to be granted a visa to live & study in the United States of America. When you advocate for violence and terrorism that privilege should be revoked and you should not be in this country. I’m glad to see one of the Columbia University terrorist sympathizers use the CBP Home app to self deport,” Kristi Noem said.
‘I am not pro-Hamas’
Ranjani told CNN that she was not active in politics. “I’m not a terrorist sympathizer, I’m not a pro-Hamas activist. I’m just literally a random student … It just seems very strange that they would spend so much, vast resources, in persecuting me.” She was to complete her PhD in May and now hopes that Columbia can reenroll her somehow.
Srinivasan’s visa was revoked, following which Columbia revoked her registration because her student visa was revoked. Srinivasan was issued two summonses for participating in a pro-Hamas rally but those were dismissed as she did not participate in those but was caught in the rally as she was coming back home. Her visa was revoked because she did not reveal these two summonses to the authorities though she said did not know that she had to tell the authorities about those issues which were not valid anymore.
“I do think that Columbia should have protected me against this. I think that that’s part of their mandate,” Srinivasan said. “When you’re attracting these international students to come and study at Columbia, when you go and do outreach all across the world to attract the best and the brightest, you have a mandate to protect them.”
“I want my PhD. I want my name cleared,” Srinivasan said these are her only two goals now.
