‘Impossible to negotiate with terrorists’: Ukrainians sceptical of Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin call amid ceasefire talks – The Times of India

Ukrainians have reacted with deep scepticism to a recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, in which Trump sought to convince Moscow to agree to a temporary ceasefire. The call, held on Tuesday, failed to secure a broader truce and only resulted in a Russian promise to pause attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days.
Distrust among soldiers
For soldiers on the front lines in eastern Ukraine, the outcome was unsurprising. Many believe that Russia, given its history, is unlikely to adhere to any ceasefire agreement.
“I think that there will never be a ceasefire from Russia because this is a country that has been at war all its existence. It is probably in their DNA to go to war against a country,” said 33-year-old Ukrainian soldier Oleg.
Another soldier, Roman, 33, suggested that Russia’s willingness to halt strikes on energy infrastructure was purely self-serving.
“This is beneficial for Putin. He doesn’t want his oil depots to be bombed because his tanks will need to refuel,” he said.
Ukraine has launched a series of drone strikes on Russian energy facilities, a tactic aimed at disrupting Moscow’s war effort.
Putin’s decision to pause such attacks followed the call with Trump, which was part of a US-led effort to broker peace in the ongoing conflict. However, for many Ukrainian fighters, talks between Washington and Moscow were troubling.
“Because I’ve spent a lot of time (fighting)… not only me, but many guys have paid the biggest price for peace,” Roman added.
Rys, a 26-year-old drone unit commander, dismissed the idea of negotiations entirely.
“It’s impossible to negotiate with terrorists,” he said.
Civilian distrust in Kyiv
In the Ukrainian capital, civilians also expressed distrust toward Putin’s promises.
“I don’t believe Putin at all, not a single word he says,” said Kyiv resident Lev Sholudko.
Shortly after the call on Tuesday, an air raid alert was issued in Kyiv, signaling a new wave of Russian strikes. One person was killed, and two hospitals were damaged.
“You can’t trust Putin at all because Russia has repeatedly shown that it does not adhere to any agreements,” Sholudko said.
Ceasefire conditions rejected
Ukraine had backed the US proposal for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. However, Putin said that a broader truce would require Ukraine to refrain from rearming and halt its ongoing military mobilization—conditions Kyiv has outright rejected.
“That’s unacceptable for us,” said Karyna, a 25-year-old resident. She believes that Russia will use any ceasefire to prepare for further aggression.
Her concerns were echoed by Veronika Zilnova, a 27-year-old social media moderator.
“We need to be constantly armed, constantly on the alert, because we have been standing up for our country for three years, and we cannot just give up or trust anyone,” she said, tearing up as she thought about fallen Ukrainian soldiers.
While Zilnova held out some hope that Trump was “trying to hear both sides” and could potentially be helpful to Ukraine, Sholudko remained unconvinced. He argued that Trump’s willingness to initiate dialogue with Moscow signaled that he was “Putin’s man.”
“The only right way out of all this is more weapons for Ukraine. This is the only guarantee that Ukraine will be an independent, strong, democratic country,” he said.
