Geoff Payne, father of Liam Payne, reportedly attempted to admit his son to a psychiatric facility prior to his death, as revealed by Rolling Stone.
The One Direction singer’s father sought assistance after Liam was taken to hospital in ‘serious condition’ in April 2024. Liam started 2024 in an unstable condition and entered rehabilitation in Spain concurrent with his final single release, ‘Teardrops’, but departed before completing treatment, Daily Mail reported.
Following his relapse, Geoff allegedly attempted to intervene regarding his son’s substance dependency issues, but Liam refused the suggested treatment centre. During this time, Liam’s representatives were reportedly hesitant about a South American tour, considering his unsuitable condition.
The singer missed numerous promotional commitments for his single, including scheduled interviews and performances.
Universal Republic, Liam’s U.S. record label, terminated their contract with him one month before his death, citing various concerns including his wellbeing. A source confirmed to Rolling Stone that the label opted to end the relationship rather than continue releasing music.
The legal separation from Universal Republic was completed by September. Reports suggest that around this period, Liam appeared to be improving whilst residing at a Wellington, Florida polo club. He occupied himself with artistic pursuits, songwriting, and equestrian activities.
