The Los Angeles Fire Department on Thursday confirmed that 31 people, all believed to be tunnel workers, have been safely removed from a collapsed industrial tunnel in the Wilmington area of Los Angeles.
None of the workers showed visible injuries. The incident occurred on Wednesday, with initial reports fearing that at least 15 workers were trapped inside the tunnel.
The Los Angeles Fire Department sent a massive amount of resources, including more than 100 responders, to the collapse site, located about six miles south of the tunnel’s only access point.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also kept sharing regular updates on the situation.
“LAFD has just reported that all workers who were trapped in the tunnel in Wilmington are now out and accounted for. I just spoke with many of the workers who were trapped. Thank you to all of our brave first responders who acted immediately. You are L.A.’s true heroes” Mayor Karen Bass said in the last post about the incident on X along with a video.
The city’s fire department also said that after a thorough rescue operation, all workers were accounted for and safely evacuated.
The tunnel that collapsed had a diameter of 18 ft and was being constructed for municipal wastewater management, the city’s Fire Department said in a statement.
