Pakistan is set to procure 40 advanced Chinese J-35 stealth fighter jets, according to a Chinese media report. If the deal proceeds, Pakistan will become the first country outside China to operate the J-35.
“The sale would mark Beijing’s first export of fifth-generation jets to a foreign ally and is expected to recalibrate regional dynamics, particularly in relation to Pakistan’s rival, India,” the South China Morning Post reported.
The Post cited Pakistani media reports stating that the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has approved the purchase of 40 J-35 aircraft. The jets are expected to be delivered within two years and will replace the PAF’s aging fleet of American F-16s and French Mirage fighters.
The J-35 is China’s second fifth-generation stealth fighter, following the J-20. It is a multi-role, supersonic, air-superiority fighter capable of performing both land and sea missions. China’s defense industry has reportedly geared up for mass production of the J-35.
Despite facing an economic crisis, Pakistan is reportedly moving forward with the deal. In July, BOL News, a local TV station, reported that PAF pilots had officially begun training for the J-31 stealth fighter jet in China. The J-31 is called the J-35. Pakistan Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu declared in January that “the foundation for acquiring the J-31 stealth fighter aircraft has already been laid”.
However, China has not officially confirmed the sale of J-35 fighters to Pakistan.
