South Korean court might have just destroyed NewJeans’ career – and here’s how

The meteoric rise of K-pop group NewJeans has just come crashing down. In a shocking legal blow, a South Korean court has issued an injunction preventing the five-member group from pursuing independent projects—essentially locking them into their contract with label ADOR.

This ruling, handed down by the Seoul Central District Court on Friday (March 21), is the latest twist in a bitter and very public battle between the group and their management. Last November, NewJeans attempted to sever ties with ADOR, rebranded as NJZ, and even teased new music. But with this court decision, those plans may be dead in the water.

NewJeans’ move to break away was driven by what they call ‘mistreatment’ at the hands of ADOR. In a scathing statement, member Hanni accused the company of prioritising profit over artistic integrity, alleging manipulation, miscommunication, and a complete disregard for their well-being.

“This is not the type of work ethic we respect nor want to be a part of,” Hanni declared. “To continue working under a company with no intention of protecting NewJeans would only do us harm.”

ADOR, however, has fiercely denied these allegations, maintaining that their exclusive contract with the group remains valid. The label, which operates under K-pop powerhouse HYBE (home to BTS), celebrated the court’s decision, vowing to continue managing NewJeans and supporting their careers—whether they like it or not.

The feud has been a media sensation in South Korea and beyond, with accusations flying, audits conducted, and an emotional press conference that laid bare the tensions between the group and their former agency. Fans have been split, some backing the idols’ bid for artistic freedom, others questioning their decision to go rogue against a company that propelled them to global fame.

With this ruling, NewJeans’ rebellious rebranding as NJZ is in limbo. Their planned comeback is now uncertain, and their career—once unstoppable—now hangs by a thread. Will they fight back and risk industry blacklisting, or will they be forced to bow to corporate control? One thing’s for sure—K-pop’s latest legal drama is far from over.
