US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the termination of two federal grants awarded to Harvard University on Wednesday. The grants, which together amounted to over $2.7 million, were part of the Department of Homeland Security’s ongoing programs.
The cancellation aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader initiative to scrutinise federal support to institutions he deems to be promoting “radical ideology.” Earlier, Trump had called for a freeze on $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard and even called for revoking its tax-exempt status.
“This action follows President Donald J. Trump’s decision to freeze $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard University, proposing the revocation of its tax-exempt status over its radical ideology,” Noem stated in her announcement.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump hinted at a punishment for the university. On Truth Social, he posted, “Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting ‘Sickness?’ Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!”
