Trump drops loyalist Ed Martin, names Jeanine Pirro as interim DC prosecutor

US President Donald Trump has withdrawn his nomination of conservative activist Ed Martin Jr to serve as US Attorney for Washington, DC, after facing bipartisan criticism over Martin’s lack of prosecutorial experience, inflammatory political stances, and vocal support for January 6 rioters.

Instead, Trump announced Martin will take on new roles within the Justice Department as associate deputy attorney general, pardon attorney, and director of a “weaponization working group.” This group will focus on investigating perceived political bias in past Justice Department actions, especially during the Biden administration.

Martin, who previously served as acting US Attorney for DC, became a contentious figure for firing staff, pushing politically charged investigations, and supporting Capitol riot defendants — including praising a rioter with a history of white supremacist rhetoric. He failed to initially disclose frequent appearances on Russian state media, further eroding confidence in his nomination.

Amid growing opposition, including from Senate Republicans and over 100 former prosecutors, Trump acknowledged Martin wouldn’t be confirmed. In response, Trump appointed Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the interim top federal prosecutor for DC.

Despite the backlash, Martin retains backing from key conservative figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr., who credit him for fighting crime and championing right-wing causes. His temporary appointment expires May 20.
