Trump urges Russia to halt attacks as Rubio warns US may exit Ukraine peace deal

US President Donald Trump on April 27 called on Russia to stop its attacks on Ukraine, expressing disappointment in Moscow’s continued aggression. In New Jersey, Trump said his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Vatican had gone well, describing Zelenskyy as ‘calmer’ and willing to ‘make a deal’.

The two leaders met in Rome during the funeral of Pope Francis, marking their first encounter following a tense White House meeting in February. The meeting aimed to revive stalled efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The White House called the Trump-Zelenskyy meeting “very productive,” while the Ukrainian President described it as a “good” and “very symbolic” exchange that could become historic if it leads to joint results.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration could walk away from the peace deal if Russia and Ukraine fail to make meaningful progress.

“We cannot continue to dedicate time and resources to this effort if it’s not going to come to fruition.” Rubio said on NBC’s Meet the Press.

Trump Criticises Putin

Following his meeting with Zelenskyy in Rome, Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying there’s “no reason” for Russia to bomb civilian areas. He also said that Putin may have no intention of reaching a settlement.

“There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns, over the last few days. It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along and has to be dealt with differently, through ‘Banking’ or ‘Secondary Sanctions?’ Too many people are dying,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Russian Foreign Minister Defends Strikes

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov defended recent missile strikes, claiming they targeted military sites, not purely civilian areas. Taking to Telegram, Zelenskyy said Russian forces had carried out nearly 70 attacks on Sunday alone, arguing the world wasn’t doing enough to pressure Moscow to end the war.

Tensions have also emerged over differing peace proposals. The US suggested recognizing Russia’s control over Crimea and other occupied areas in exchange for a ceasefire. Ukraine and European officials rejected that idea, preferring to postpone territorial talks until after a truce.

Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, said the president remains committed to the peace deal and is also working with Ukraine on rare earth mineral agreements. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that Trump might “cave to Putin,” calling such a move a “moral tragedy.”
