A chaotic scene unfolded early Sunday morning in Ozone Park, Queens, as a group of people wreaked havoc, destroying three police cars after a crackdown by the NYPD.
The disturbance started around 1 AM on Rockaway Boulevard. Police were informed of a large car party, and it quickly got out of hand. Footage from the scene shows a mob slamming and jumping on police vehicles.
In one of the videos, people can be seen leaping onto the hood of an police vehicle and shattering its windscreen with a traffic cone. Others hurled additional cones at the vehicles, denting them and shattering windows.
During the chaos, some of the vehicles had their sirens on as they tried to move away, but the attackers kept going.
Three suspects arrested
No one was injured in the attack, though damage to police cars was apparent. The NYPD said three police cars were damaged. Police arrested three suspects related to the incident. Of those arrested, 23-year-old Jordi Montesquieu was indicted with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and other charges.
Tyler Newman and Tristian Nandram were also arrested. Nandram is charged with stealing a bag of police documents from one of the wrecked vehicles.
GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa has attributed the increase in lawlessness to existing policies.
“Our officers are the best in the world, but we must let them do their jobs without fear, hesitation, or political interference,” he said on X.
The NYPD is searching for other suspects in the mayhem. Photos of the accused have been released to the public. The suspects wore masks.
