Jessica Aber, the former US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead in her home on Saturday morning, with authorities indicating that her death appears to be due to natural causes.
The Alexandria police department provided an update Tuesday evening, saying that detectives had found “no evidence suggesting that her death was caused by anything other than natural causes.”
Aber, 43, was discovered around 9.20 am, prompting an outpouring of condolences from current and former department of justice officials. A family friend previously told NBC News that police suspected a medical issue as the cause, while two former senior justice department officials also noted that local authorities did not believe foul play was involved.
The official cause and manner of death have not yet been released, pending a final ruling from the office of the chief medical examiner.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the case will remain open until the OCME determines the cause and manner of death,” Alexandria police said. “We urge the public to respect the privacy of Ms Aber’s family during this time of loss.”
Aber, who served during the Biden administration, was known for her office’s prosecutions of CIA leaks and Russian nationals involved in fraud cases within the US. She stepped down from her position when President Trump took office in January.
Authorities said any further updates regarding the circumstances of her death would come from the medical examiner’s office.
