What triggered the wildfire in Los Angeles? – Times of India

Two massive wildfires broke out in Los Angeles on Tuesday, leaving destruction and chaos in their wake. The fires ravaged Pacific Palisades and Altadena’s Eaton Canyon, consuming homes, prompting evacuations, and disrupting life for thousands of residents.
In Pacific Palisades, the fire began around 10:30 a.m. and quickly spread, burning 4.6 square miles of land. Thick plumes of smoke were visible across the city, with some residents in Venice Beach, located 10 kilometres away, reporting flames on the horizon. Evacuation orders were issued as major roads, including parts of Interstate 10 and the Pacific Coast Highway, were closed to all non-essential vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Altadena fire ignited around 6:30 p.m. near Eaton Canyon Natural Area. It spread rapidly, covering 400 acres and forcing evacuations in multiple neighbourhoods, including Kinneloa Canyon and Outpost Lane. Residents and hikers fled as the fire turned the skies orange and filled the air with thick smoke.
What caused the fire?
Historically, California has had many wildfires, which have increased manifold in recent times.
California, like much of the West, typically receives most of its moisture in the fall and winter. As a result, its vegetation remains dry during the summer due to low rainfall and higher temperatures, creating conditions that can ignite wildfires. However, with global warming, temperatures have risen by 1-2 degrees Celsius, contributing to an increase in wildfire incidents.
Southern California has faced dry and windy weather, with minimal rainfall since early May. The combination of the infamous Santa Ana winds and higher-than-average temperatures has created highly flammable conditions, making the region vulnerable to wildfires.
Santa Ana winds are dry and warm (often hot) winds that blow westward from inland areas toward the Southern California coast. These winds are generally seasonal, occurring between October and March, with their peak in December.
The National Weather Service cautioned that winds could strengthen overnight, with isolated gusts of up to 100 mph (160 kph) expected in mountainous and foothill regions. These conditions remain a serious challenge for firefighting efforts and could cause the fires to spread further.

What is the impact of the wildfire?
The Los Angeles wildfires have caused widespread panic, forcing thousands to evacuate as flames threatened thousands of structures.
Residents were trapped in gridlocked traffic, some abandoning cars and fleeing on foot. Major roads were closed, and power cuts affected people.
The severe winds have worsened the fire risk, rapidly drying out vegetation and complicating firefighting efforts.
The situation has been chaotic, with bulldozers clearing abandoned vehicles to allow emergency teams access. As the fire continues to spread, authorities are working to manage the crisis, while residents remain on edge due to the ongoing threat posed by strong winds and dry conditions.
