Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, left his life of opulence as his fight was against capitalism. But now it has become a talking point that the anti-capitalist assassin was arrested from a McDonald’s, stopped by a Starbucks before the alleged murder and now has two top lawyers to represent in New York and Pennsylvania — Friedman Angifilo in NY and Thomas Dicky in Pennsylvania.
Who is paying the bills of the two top lawyers? CNN reached out to both of them and both of them declined to comment on who is paying their legal fees. “His attorney in Pennsylvania has declined to say if Mangione’s prominent Baltimore family is fronting his legal bills, though Thomas Dickey told CNN this week members of the public had offered to contribute,” the report said. In that interview, Dickey also said that it’s unlikely that he would be paid from the public fund. As on Sunday, Luigi Mangione supporters raised over $100,000 for a legal defense fund.
After all, Mangione might not be that hateful towards wealth as his social media personality many impress people about but now he might not be able to inherit his family property.
Mangione’s Baltimore family is wealthy and can afford a battery of lawyers but they are not open about their association in the case.
Mangione’s grandmother Mary C Mangione is believed to have left an estate worth at least $30 million to her family when she died in 2023 but documents reveal that the estate could even be as much as $100 million to be divided among her 10 children.
According to reports, the money was entered into a trust with each of her children including Mangione’s father being trustees who can make withdrawals. But the trust gives trustees the power to prevent any money from going to someone who has been “charged, indicted, convicted of or pleaded guilty to a felony”.
Mangione is in Pennsylvania and is fighting his extradition from Pennsylvania but he may soon stop fighting the extradition as a high-profile New York attorney — Friedman Agnifilo — has been hired by Mangione.
Mangione is in custody on Pennsylvania charges related to a gun and fake ID police say they found when they arrested him in Altoona. He also plans to plead not guilty to the Pennsylvania charges, his attorney for Pennsylvania Thomas Dickey said.
