This however was not an usual Kohli dismissal – outside the off stump, with the ball nipping away from him. This time. Hazlewood bounced Kohli out on the off stump, forcing the batter’s dismissal. Eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out, how Australia have targeted Kohli with the short ball outside of India.

Once prolific against the short ball, the ageing Virat Kohli has gotten out in a near-similar manner against Australia in the World Test Championship 2023 and now in the Perth Test match. An X user pointed out that Virat Kohli was dismissed against a rising ball from Mitchell Starc in the first innings of the WTC 2023 Final.

In that game, Kohli had come out to bat when India were reeling at 30 for 2 following opening batter Shubman Gill’s wicket. The 34-year-old got off to a cautious start alongside Cheteshwar Pujara. The two batters stitched a 20-run stand before Pujara was cleaned up by fast-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green in the 14th over.

Kohli was undone by a brilliant delivery from Starc. The ball bounced quickly from short of good length to take Kohli by surprise and took his edge to the slip cordon. In that delivery, Kohli’s front foot press became his undoing.
